Ian Colin Cameron, 2nd Battalion, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders 1897-1975

Brigadier Ian Colin Cameron was born the 2nd son of Lieutenant Colonel C. Cameron, Indian Medical Service, on the 7th March 1897. He was comissioned into the Cameron Highlanders on 16th December 1914. He was posted to the 2nd Camerons who were in India on the outbreak of the war and served throughout the war with them in Salonika. After the war he held postings with the 4th Battaion as Adjutant from 1923-26 and later posted to the Sudan with the 1st Battalion in 1936. He later commanded the Depot from 14th January 1936. On 4th November 1937, he was given command of the 2nd Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and took them to Egypt. He commanded them during the first battle of the desert campaign against the Italians at Maktila Camp in October 1940. He was awarded the OBE and later became a T/Brigadier and ended his career by retiring at substantive Colonel and Hon. Brigadier. He later became one of the chief editors of the Historical Records of the Cameron Highlanders. One of his subalterns, Peter Cochrane DSO MC referred to him in his book, 'Charlie Company In service with C Company 2nd Cameron Highlanders 1940-44'. "......At a higher level, Colonel Cameron left us in November after a tremendous week of non-stop exercises; it was thanks to him that the 2nd Camerons was so highly trained a unit."
